MOUNTAIN MASHERS

Game Description

Mountain Mashers is a 2D side-scrolling hack and slash about an Aztec warrior, with a “Thor-like” power to recall his weapon, destined to bring down an almighty storm deity.

This is a cross degree project that includes computer science students and art students. The game was built on a custom engine created by our computer science members.

MY CONTRIBUTIONS

GAME DESIGN

I was in charge of designing the combat system, parts of the narrative, and general game concept.

LEVEL DESIGN

After the drafting phase, level design was passed on to me for completion and polish.

ENEMY DESIGN

The enemy behaviors were drafted out by me on a flowchart then created by my tech team in the engine using C++.

POST MORTEM

GENERAL DESIGN & PRODUCTION

Due to being built on a custom engine created by my teamates, we had many constraints when creating mountain mashers. Quality of life features we often take for granted in commercial engines were too difficult to implement from scratch with our tight timeframe so the desingers had to find creative solutions to otherwise trivial matters. Such as how to level building and animating cutscenes.

GAMEPLAY

Designing the combat for Mountain Mashers was tricky as it required complete communication with the programming team. We often had to spend hours fine tuning things together as I was unable to code it myself. This made me have to streamline the complexity of the combat system so as to not get bogged down by the details and deliver the product on time. In hindsight, I should have done a prototype in a commercial engine so that they can have a reference.
